By the time Leon Russell became known to audiences in the late 60s as the phenomenal piano man on Joe Cocker's "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour, he was already revered within the music industry as the ultimate rock and roll session man. As a member of Phil Spector's studio brigade known as the "Wall of Sound", Russell had recorded with or written for musicians ranging from The Byrds to Frank Sinatra to Ike and Tina Turner.
Branching out beyond the rock and roll and pop his career had centered around, he made forays into country (pairing with Willie Nelson) and bluegrass (in his band New Grass Revival), recording dozens of albums while continuing to pen tunes for other performers. Russell scored big with hits like "Tightrope", "Delta Lady", "This Masquerade", and "Roll away the Stone", earning five gold records over the course of his career. The nineties saw a return to the bluesy rock and roll sound he succeeds in nailing so well.
There is simply no performer today who can replicate his signature gravelly voice and rolling piano style. It is that combination and his astounding versatility that have given him a well-deserved long and still going strong career in rock and roll.
